Lesson 2- Blog Phase II and Reflection

Lesson 2- Blog Phase II and Reflection

  • Instructional Decisions/Teaching (InTask Standard # 9): Discuss the implementation process and describe what went well and what did not.

What went well:

  • Students were engaged and fully participated in using the digital venn diagram.

  • Color coding the lesson slides eliminated student confusion.

  • Circulating the room during group and individual work allowed the teacher to provide support and clarification.

  • Posting, stating, and restating the lesson objective (I can Statement) ensured the students knew the purpose of the lesson.

  • Stating and reminding the students that a venn diagram is a type of graphic organizer helped the students understand its purpose.

  • Writing an informative paragraph gave the venn diagram a purpose.

  • Students were engaged and stayed on task through the entire lesson.

  • Lesson remained aligned with both the standard and the objective.

  • Lesson stayed within the allotted time.

What didn’t go well:

  • Teacher did not tell the students to NOT play with the venn diagram that was sent in an earlier email.

  • Students accidentally deleted the entire pre-made, color-coded venn diagram before the lesson.

  • Teacher had to have the students try and rebuild the venn diagram in a platform that they had never seen before.

  • The lesson was watered down because of the time spent on rebuilding the diagram.

  • Students were unsure of how to use the diagram correctly because the rebuilt diagram was not as user friendly.

  • How well was the alignment to objectives and standards maintained?

    • Alignment was well maintained throughout the entire lesson.

    • By stating the I Can Statement at the beginning of the lesson, the students knew the purpose of the lesson.

    • Modeling how to read two different passages and put the key facts on both sides of the diagram, then moving the similar facts to the middle showed the students exactly how to compare and contrast two texts with the same topic.

    • Restating the I Can Statement before beginning the independent task reminded students the purpose of the lesson.

    • Summative assessment was in direct alignment with the lesson objective.

  • Describe any modification made during the implementation of the lesson

  • Rebuild the venn diagram

  • Maintain the lesson without the technology component being much of any kind of assistance other than student engagement.

  • Mechanics:

What technologies did I use (for the teacher and the learner)?

  • Miro

  • Google Slides

  • Nearpod

How were the technologies used (by whom and in what manner)?

  • Nearpod was used by the teacher to introduce using a compare and contrast venn diagram to the students.

  • Google Slide was used by the teacher to create a projected I Can Statement, task directions, color coded group reading slides, miro link, and keep the lesson order organized..

  • Miro was used by the teacher and the students to create a digitally shared venn diagram and organize the information.

  • Google Slide was used by students to state and restate the I Can Statement.

  • Google Slide was used by students as visual aid for task directions.

My lesson was within the correct time frame because…

  • The teacher spent time carefully planning.

  • The teacher spent time creating a method to keep herself and the students on task.

  • The teacher planned to allow for discussion and modeling.

  • The teacher kept the students engaged and on task by constantly monitoring the students.

Describe your students' level of success in achieving the standards and objectives for your lesson based on your assessment

  • Student work showed that all students were able to follow the rubric and provide the expected information with 100% accuracy.

Describe the level of success you had in teaching the lesson

  • This lesson was highly successful.

    • How do your individual reflections support this?

      • My thoughts about the lesson were positive throughout all the questioning components despite the venn diagram setback.

    • How do the comments from your classmates support this?

  • What did you learn from designing and teaching this lesson and how will you use this in the creation of future lessons/learning activities?

    • Be brave with technology and don’t be intimidated by experimenting with it.

    • Don’t be afraid the lesson is a failure if things don’t go as planned.

    • It’s best practice to reflect on lessons.

    • Be open to learn from your students.

    • Success and perfection are not the same thing- mistakes are a learning tool.

    • Make purposeful, well planned, well organized lessons you can use again.

    • I found that using Google Slide really helps in keeping the lesson delivery organized and students stay more engaged when they can SEE the directions and steps for tasks.

    • I found that Google Slide is a great way to create group work to be shared.
