Blog Phase II

  • Instructional Decisions/Teaching (InTask Standard # 9): Discuss the implementation process and describe what went well and what did not.

What went well:

  • Students were engaged and fully participated in the intro notice and wonder video clip. Students were excited to identify what wonder of the world we would be visiting during the lesson.

  • Students enjoyed the Climb It Nearpod game to review the definitions of the text features they had been learning that week.

  • Technology components worked as planned.

  • Color coding the group slides eliminated student confusion.

  • Anchor Chart provided support during the entire lesson.

  • Circulating the room during group and individual work allowed the teacher to provide support and clarification.

  • Posting, stating, and restating the lesson objective (I can Statement) ensured the students knew the purpose of the lesson.

  • Using an Informational Text to find facts about a location that tied into the thematic unit gave the lesson objective a purpose.

  • Creating a word wall card gave the lesson tasks a purpose.

  • Assessment identified a text feature that needed to be reviewed.

  • Students were engaged and stayed on task through the entire lesson.

  • Students learned facts about Mount Everest (a wonders of the world location for the thematic unit) while doing group research in an informational text- applied skills/knowledge.

  • Lesson remained aligned with both the standard and the objective.

What didn’t go well:

  • Minor technology glitch with the Nearpod Climb It review game.

  • Time spent on making student copies of the Informational Text tradebook.

  • How well was the alignment to objectives and standards maintained?

    • Alignment was well maintained throughout the entire lesson.

    • By stating the I Can Statement at the beginning of the lesson, the students knew the purpose of the lesson.

    • Modeling how to identify and use text features to complete the group task ensured that the students understood they were to find information AND to identify the text feature they used to find that information.

    • Creating a group task that asked for both Mount Everest facts AND the text features used to find the information, ensured that students were working in alignment with the standard and the lesson objective.

    • Restating the I Can Statement before beginning the group task reminded students the purpose of the lesson.

    • Summative assessment was in direct alignment with the lesson objective.

  • Describe any modification made during the implementation of the lesson

  • No modifications were necessary.

  • Mechanics:

What technologies did I use (for the teacher and the learner)?

  • Youtube video

  • Google Slides

  • Nearpod

How were the technologies used (by whom and in what manner)?

  • Youtube video was used by the teacher to open the lesson with a notice and wonder scene.

  • Google Slide was used by the teacher to create a projected I Can Statement, task directions, color coded group slides, color coded assessment links and keep the lesson order organized..

  • Nearpod was used by the teacher to create an interactive review game.

  • Nearpod was used by the teacher to create a summative assessment.

  • Youtube was used by students to watch the intro notice and wonder video.

  • Google Slide was used by students to state and restate the I Can Statement.

  • Google Slide was used by students as visual aid for task directions.

  • Google Slide was used by students to organize and share their research and text features identification.

  • Google Slide was used by students to get to Nearpod for activity and assessment.

My lesson was within the correct time frame because…

  • The teacher spent time carefully planning.

  • The teacher spent time creating a method to keep herself and the students on task.

  • The teacher planned to allow for discussion and modeling.

  • The teacher kept the students engaged and on task by constantly monitoring the students.

Include at least 2 digital artifacts that demonstrate what you or your students (peers) have created as a result of your lesson

Describe your students' level of success in achieving the standards and objectives for your lesson based on your assessment

  • The group task shows that the students 100% achieved the objective of the lesson by USING an informational text, IDENTIFYING the text features they used, and then APPLYING that knowledge to find, list, and share the information about Mount Everest that they found.

  • Word Wall cards indicate that the students were able to use their text feature knowledge to create a meaningful artifact.

  • Summative Assessment shows that the students can match text features with their definitions with 100% accuracy.

  • Modified version of Summative Assessment shows that students requiring reading differentiation to show content understanding were also 100% successful in knowledge content.

Describe the level of success you had in teaching the lesson

  • This lesson was highly successful.

    • How do your individual reflections support this?

      • My thoughts about the lesson were positive throughout all the questioning components.

    • How do the comments from your classmates support this?

  • What did you learn from designing and teaching this lesson and how will you use this in the creation of future lessons/learning activities?

    • Be brave with technology and don’t be intimidated by experimenting with it.

    • Don’t be afraid the lesson is a failure if things don’t go as planned.

    • It’s best practice to reflect on lessons.

    • Be open to learn from your students.

    • Success and perfection are not the same thing- mistakes are a learning tool.

    • Make purposeful, well planned, well organized lessons you can use again.

    • I found that the combination of Google Slide and Nearpod is a great lesson format for any content.

    • I found that using Google Slide really helps in keeping the lesson delivery organized and students stay more engaged when they can SEE the directions and steps for tasks.

    • I found that Google Slide is a great way to create group work to be shared.
